Does having COVID-19 protect you adequately against getting it again? There are numerous cases of people getting COVID-19 more than once. So, the question is whether getting vaccinated after a first infection protects against a second infection?
To help answer this question a study of over 95,000 adults in Rhode Island from March 2020 to December 2021 was done. Researches compared re-infection rates between people who were vaccinated after their first infection compared to those who did not get vaccinated.
The results showed that vaccination supplemented natural immunity from the initial infection. This resulted in approximately a 50% reduction in re-infection among those who were vaccinated compared to those who were not vaccinated.
The bottom line is: get vaccinated even if you had an infection with COVID-19. This study was published by Nickolas Lewis and colleagues in JAMA Network Open on July 27, 2022.
